PBX configuration
IP phones are built on a Virtual Superloop (loop 252 in this example) without worrying about where they go on a physical card or punch block. You will plug the phones LAN cable(s) into a layer 2 data switch on the PBX's TLAN network/subnet.
Create a Virtual superloop, if not already:

Avaya recommends programming Phantom and Virtual superloops from the highest loop number backward.
Note, Phantom superloops are for 500 type phones. Virtual superloops are for IP phones and trunks, and what we need here.
If 252 is our virtual superloop, the TN range is: 252 (0-1) (0-15) (0-31). There are 32 units (0-31) per virtual line card, 16 line cards (0-15) per virtual shelf, and 2 virtual shelves (0-1). Therefore, a maximum of 1024 units are supported per virtual superloop.
Create a set:

See 1120e Soft Keys for more information on programming keys. Personal Directories (PD) must be enabled on the Node in order for last number redial and caller log Soft Keys to appear. Check the Signalling Server settings (in Element Manager) if necessary.
The Zone configuration will allow automatic CODEC selection depending on bandwidth availability. It should ideally have an Intrazone Strategy = BQ (Best Quality), and Intent = MO (Best Quality). IP phones should always be in their own zone. Do NOT use zone zero.
Phone configuration
Manual configuration is only necessary is cases where there's no DHCP server!
- Plug in the IP phone.
- Wait until NORTEL or AVAYA appears in the lower left of the screen.
- Press from left to right in sequence, the four keys under the display to enter the menu.
Note: Later units use the sequence: 2, 6, 5, 6, 7, *, 7, 3, 8, Down (COLOR*SET) - Accept default settings, except for the following:

The set will restart, and hopefully register. If successful, you will be prompted to enter the Node ID and set TN. A firmware download will probably then occur, after which the set will re-boot and be ready for use. If deploying several sets, refer to: Auto Provisioning.
In installations with a DHCP server, the phone will automatically aquire an IP address, and prompt for Node ID and set TN.
Note:
- Configuration settings are by default "sticky", eg, persistent unless changed.
- If a phone fails to automatically register, try resetting it: * * 7 3 6 3 9 <MAC> # #
- the MAC address is printed on the label on the underside on the phone.
- as the number is HEX, press 2 for A, B or C, and 3 for D, E, or F.
